Trail Ratings & Choosing the Right Line

Goal of this guide: help you choose trails that match your Jeep and your skill level, and teach you how to “read” obstacles so you can tackle them with confidence, control, and safety.

Trail ratings exist to give drivers a rough idea of what to expect on a given trail. The most widely accepted system in the United States—used in places like Moab and other major off-road destinations—is the 1 to 10 scale. While some regions or parks use colors (green, blue, black, similar to ski slopes), or a 1–5 system, the 1–10 system provides more detail and nuance. Be sure to research how the area you are going to rates their trails. It’s also the one most Jeepers will encounter when researching famous trails.

On this scale, 1 represents an easy dirt road that nearly any high-clearance 4x4 can handle, while 10 is a technical, dangerous route reserved for purpose-built rock buggies. A stock Jeep might be comfortable on trails up to a 3, while a well-built rig with lockers, lift, and armor could confidently tackle trails in the 5–7 range. Trails rated 8–10 often require one-ton axles, 40+ inch tires, advanced suspension, and a highly experienced driver. Even then, these trails can carry a high risk of body damage or mechanical failure.

It’s important to note that these ratings are guidelines, not guarantees. A trail that is normally considered a “4” in dry weather can quickly feel like a “6” after a storm. Rock ledges may erode, sand washes may deepen, and obstacles can shift as rigs repeatedly work their way over them. Always use ratings as a starting point, then assess conditions on the ground.

Matching the trail to your Jeep and your comfort zone is one of the most important parts of off-roading. Start by knowing your vehicle: What size tires are you running? Do you have lockers, and if so, front, rear, or both? What’s your crawl ratio? Do you have armor and skid plates to protect vulnerable areas? Just as critical is being honest about your driving skill. A Jeep with every upgrade in the catalog is still only as capable as the person behind the wheel.

Lockers and big tires don’t make your Jeep invincible—they just give you tools to tackle harder obstacles when paired with skill and restraint. Overconfidence leads to broken parts and risky situations. Work your way up gradually, gaining seat time and experience before moving into higher-rated trails.

If you’re heading out in a stock Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator, you’ll enjoy trails in the 1–3 range—dirt roads, mild climbs, and maybe some light rocks. If you’ve added a lift and 35-inch tires, you can confidently take on trails rated 4–5, where you’ll find off-camber situations, bigger ledges, and more challenging climbs. Once you’re in the 37–40 inch tire range with proper gearing, lockers, and armor, trails in the 6–7 zone become reasonable, offering rock gardens, deep notches, and technical climbs that test traction and line choice. Beyond that, into the 8–10 range, you’re in extreme territory—think Moab’s Pritchett Canyon or Colorado’s Carnage Canyon—where mistakes can mean rollovers or catastrophic mechanical failure.

Trail selection also depends on your group. If you’re leading a ride, always pick a trail that the least capable vehicle can complete safely. Nothing ruins a day faster than forcing someone into an obstacle they can’t handle, breaking parts, or putting them in danger. A good day on the trail is about everyone making it out together, not about proving your Jeep can climb something no one else can.

Even on a trail that matches your Jeep’s capabilities, the line you choose makes all the difference. Off-roading is often less about raw horsepower and more about finesse, balance, and tire placement. Before tackling an obstacle, stop and get out. Walk the line, look at where each tire will go, and think through what your Jeep will do at each stage of the climb. Picture how your suspension will flex, where your diffs and tie rods might hang, and whether your bumpers or rock sliders will contact anything.

When approaching a ledge, square your tires against it so they can climb smoothly instead of glancing off at an angle. In a v-notch, keep at least one tire riding higher on the wall to keep your belly and differentials from dropping into the deepest part of the notch. Adjust how high you climb based on traction and stability. On off-camber sections, hug the high side to keep the Jeep stable and minimize the risk of rolling. Rock gardens require patience—thread your way so your tires ride the high points, protecting your diffs and avoiding hang-ups.

Spotters are invaluable here. A good spotter acts as your outside eyes, guiding your tires and keeping you clear of hazards. But there should only ever be one spotter giving directions. Conflicting signals cause confusion and mistakes. Once you’ve chosen a spotter, trust them fully and commit to their instructions. Changing spotters or second-guessing mid-obstacle is how miscommunication—and accidents—happen. Establish simple, clear hand signals before you start, and keep communication short and precise.

Your right foot is the most dangerous tool on the trail. Resist the urge to rely on momentum—bumping obstacles at speed is how axles bend and driveshafts snap. Use your gearing, especially 4-Low, to crawl obstacles slowly and deliberately. Left-foot braking can also be a useful technique, lightly applying brake while feeding throttle to keep your driveline loaded and prevent jerky wheelspin.

Know when to stop. If you’ve walked an obstacle and can’t see a safe line, or if your gut says it’s not worth it, listen. Winching through, bypassing, or even turning back are all better options than risking a rollover or mechanical carnage. Off-roading is about enjoying the outdoors and challenging yourself within reason, not gambling your safety or your Jeep.

The decision to attempt a trail doesn’t start when you’re facing an obstacle—it starts in your driveway. A thorough pre-trip inspection reduces surprises: check your fluids, torque your lug nuts, inspect your steering components, and make sure your recovery gear is packed and functional. Carry a reliable map or app with offline access, and always bring more water than you think you’ll need. The trail rating tells you what to expect, but preparation ensures you’re ready for it.

The trail rating system is there to guide you, but it’s your responsibility to make smart choices. Know your Jeep, know your limits, and respect the terrain. The right line, chosen with patience and foresight, will carry you safely through obstacles that might stop a less thoughtful driver. Mastering trail ratings and line choice is the foundation of off-roading—and it’s what transforms your Jeep from a vehicle into a true adventure machine.

Tires, Traction & Wheel Fitment

Goal of this guide: help you understand how tires and wheels directly affect off-road performance, why traction starts with the right tire choice, and how wheel fitment determines whether your setup works smoothly or causes headaches on the trail.

If there’s one upgrade that transforms a Jeep off-road, it’s the tires. Suspension, gearing, and lockers all matter—but without the right rubber, you won’t get far. Tires are the only point of contact between your Jeep and the terrain, and every decision about tread, size, and construction shows up immediately in how your rig drives.

  • All-Terrain (A/T): Balanced for rigs that see more pavement than dirt. Quieter on the road, long-lasting tread, but limited bite in mud or slick rock.
  • Mud-Terrain (M/T): Aggressive tread and open voids for maximum grip in dirt, sand, and mud. Louder on the street, faster wear, but unmatched off-road traction.
  • Sticky Compounds: Soft rubber that grabs rock like glue. Perfect for hardcore crawling, but short lifespan and poor road manners mean they’re only for trailered rigs.

Tire Construction Matters: Load rating and sidewall strength play just as big a role as tread design. Softer C-load radials flex more and ride comfortably but puncture more easily. E-load radials or 3-ply sidewalls (like Mickey Thompson Baja Boss or BFG KM3) resist cuts and sidewall tears—essential in sharp rock terrain. Hardcore crawlers may still use bias-ply stickies for extreme flex, but radials dominate for dual-purpose rigs.

Tire Size:

  • 33–35s → Excellent for daily-driven Jeeps with moderate trail ability.
  • 37s → The sweet spot for serious weekend wheelers—capable on tougher trails without demanding extreme modifications.
  • 40+ → Belong on hardcore builds with axle swaps, re-gearing, hydro assist steering, and driveline upgrades.

Unleash off-roading’s potential by mastering one of the simplest yet most effective techniques: airing down your tires. Dropping pressure transforms the way your Jeep grips sand, snow, dirt, rocks, and mud by allowing the tire to flex and mold around obstacles, creating a much larger contact patch.

  • Non-Beadlock Wheels: Safe range is usually 15–18 PSI, depending on tire size and Jeep weight. Below this, you risk popping a bead.
  • Beadlock Wheels: Clamp the tire bead, making it possible to run as low as 5–8 PSI in extreme terrain. That extra flexibility can mean the difference between spinning and crawling up smoothly. Even so, avoid running ultra-low pressures for extended periods.

No matter your setup, always reinflate before hitting pavement. Running highway speeds on underinflated tires builds heat, weakens sidewalls, and can cause blowouts. Carry an onboard compressor, CO₂ tank, or power inflator every trip so you can air back up before leaving the trail.

The “right” pressure isn’t a fixed number—it depends on your tire size, compound, Jeep weight, and terrain. A 37” M/T on a heavy JKU won’t behave the same as a 35” A/T on a two-door TJ. Dial in your ideal PSI through experience and adjust as needed, but always keep safety first.

Bolt Patterns (common Jeep setups):

  • 5x4.5 → older Wranglers, Cherokees (XJ)
  • 5x5 → JK, JL, JT
  • 8x6.5 / 8x170 → one-ton axle swaps

Diameter & Width:

  • 17-inch wheels → The most versatile choice. Maximize sidewall flex, smoother ride, and industry standard for crawling.
  • 20-inch wheels → Popular on 37s and larger. With modern tire compounds, they’re not just for show—they still perform well, especially with 40s where plenty of sidewall remains.
  • Width match-up:
  • 12.5” tires → best on 8.5–9” wheels
  • 13.5–14.5” tires → best on 9.5–10” wheels
    Too wide exposes rims and makes bead loss easier; too narrow pinches sidewalls and causes uneven wear.

Hub Bore: Wheels must seat properly on the hub. Aftermarket wheels may require hub-centric rings for correct fitment.

Offset (mm) and backspacing (inches) describe wheel position relative to suspension and fenders:

  • Too much positive offset (more backspacing): Wheels tuck inward, rubbing control arms, sway bars, or inner fenders.
  • Too much negative offset (less backspacing): Wheels stick out aggressively. Clears suspension but increases scrub radius, adds leverage to steering, and accelerates ball joint/bearing wear.

The right balance provides clearance without stressing components or creating bump steer issues.

Different terrain rewards different setups:

  • Mud: Taller, narrower M/Ts clear mud better and dig down to firm ground.
  • Rocks: Wider sticky compounds dominate, gripping ledges and slabs.
  • Sand & Snow: Wide A/Ts aired way down “float” better than skinny tires.
  • Mixed/Overlanding: Hybrid tires (between A/T and M/T) provide versatility across multiple surfaces.
  • Stock Jeep / Light Trails: 33” A/Ts on stock or mild offset wheels. Simple, reliable, no beadlocks needed.
  • Weekend Wheeler: 35–37” M/Ts on 17x8.5 or 17x9 wheels with proper offset. Air down on the trail, air up for the drive home. Ideal mix of capability and daily drivability.
  • Street-Oriented Rig: 37–40” tires on 20s. Great stance, comfortable on pavement, still functional on light to moderate trails with modern compounds.
  • Dedicated Crawler / Trailer Queen: 40–42” stickies on 17” or 20” beadlocks. Both work in extreme crawling, but 17s maximize sidewall flex. Hydro assist steering is strongly recommended here.
  • Match wheel/tire weight to axle strength—don’t run 40s on stock axles.
  • Rotate tires often—off-road use creates uneven wear.
  • Don’t skip balancing—beads, rings, or weights make a huge difference.
  • Protect your valve stems—carry spares or guards.
  • Plan for your spare—a 40+ inch tire won’t fit a stock carrier.
  • Pick function over stance—geometry and clearance matter more than wide poke.
